These two models fail in opposite directions, which makes choosing between them straightforward once you know what you are making. SDXL is precise: it resolves material detail, holds edges, follows long prompts, and produces images that hold up when you zoom in. Kandinsky is atmospheric: it produces richer, more saturated colour and smoother transitions, at the cost of some sharpness and literal accuracy.
In practice that maps onto a simple rule. If the image needs to be believable, whether that is a product shot, a logo mark, or a piece of concept art someone has to build from, use SDXL.
