AI D&D Character Art Generator

The information on a character sheet maps unusually well onto a prompt. Race gives you the silhouette and skin tone, class gives you the armour and weapon, background gives you the wear and the props, and alignment gives you the expression and the lighting. Write them in that order and the model has everything it needs.

Where prompts fall down is in trying to describe an entire scene. A character portrait wants a chest-up or waist-up crop, one light source, and a simple background so the party can actually tell your half-orc from theirs at the table. Save the sweeping vista for a separate campaign banner.

How to get better results

  • Order the prompt as race, then build and features, then armour and weapon, then lighting. That sequence matches how the model weights early tokens.
  • Pick one light source and name it. "Torchlight from below" or "eldritch purple glow" does more for mood than any adjective.
  • Crop tight. "Waist up" or "chest up" keeps the model out of the hands and feet, where fantasy art most often falls apart.
  • Add "digital painting" or "painterly" to land in the illustrated register tabletop art lives in rather than photorealism.

Best for

  • D&D and Pathfinder character portraits
  • Roll20 and Foundry VTT tokens
  • Campaign NPC art
  • Homebrew content and one-shots

Recommended model

SDXL

SDXL renders armour, fabric texture, and dramatic lighting with enough detail to feel like commissioned fantasy art.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use this art in my campaign?
Yes. Images you generate are yours to use, including on virtual tabletops, in campaign documents, and in homebrew you share with your table.
How do I make a VTT token?
Generate a chest-up portrait with a simple background, crop it square, and mask it to a circle in any image editor. Prompting for a plain background makes that mask much cleaner.
Can I generate a whole party in one image?
You can try, but multi-character prompts blend features between figures. Generating each character separately and composing them afterwards gives far better results.
